This miniature is a copy of a drawing made by the artist Henry Edridge at Windsor in 1803 (RCIN 913865). In this portrait, Queen Charlotte is wearing a miniature, set in pearls, of her husband, King George III, on a gold chain, one of the many miniature copies of Sir William Beechey’s portrait of the king. John Hopkins (active 1791-1813), who painted this miniature, is known to have copied in miniature Beechey’s portrait of George III, perhaps the one that the queen wears in this painting. Hopkins exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1791 and 1809 and, in 1815, sold a copy of Sir David Wilkie’s Blind Fiddler (London, Tate Britain) to the prince regent. His drawing of George Place’s portrait of George III was engraved by Maria Anne Bourlier and published by Edward Harding in 1806.
The miniature is signed indistinctly on the lower left with the monogram JH.
