The third miniature by Schäfer in his series of the sons of Ernest Augustus, Elector of Hanover, and the Electress Sophia (see 420175), copied in 1845 from a portrait then at Herrenhausen, and attributed to Jacques Vaillant. The source by Vaillant was probably the painting subsequently sold in the Schloss Marienburg sale, Sotheby's, Deutschland, 5 – 15 October 2005, lot 135 (present location unknown).
Signed and dated on the reverse in pencil: A. Schäfer / fec. / Hannover / 1845; a label attached to the reverse is inscribed by the artist in ink: Nach einem Öhlgemälde von Jean Jouvenet / copirt von A. Schäfer / 1845. A second label attached to the reverse is inscribed in white chalk: Charles Philip b. 1669 – slain in battle 1690.
Half-length, in armour with a lace cravat and a blue bow at his throat.Provenance
