Henrietta Crofts, Duchess of Bolton (1683-1730) c.1700
Watercolour on vellum laid on card | 8.7 x 6.8 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 420162

The sitter in this miniature has been identified as Henrietta Crofts (c. 1683-1730), one of the illegitimate daughters of the Duke of Monmouth, who became in 1697 the third wife of Charles, 2nd Duke of Bolton. The sitter closely resembles the portrait of her by Sir Godfrey Kneller of c. 1715 in the Art Gallery of South Australia, Adelaide and the painting of her of 1721 by James Maubert in the National Gallery of Ireland (no. 4340). It has been suggested that the miniature is based on a lost painting by either Friedrich or Johann Kerseboom. The artist remains unidentified, but may be the same hand responsible for the earlier miniature of an unknown woman c. 1680 in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (D96). That miniature is described as an amateur copy after an image by Peter Cross.
