This is a nineteenth-century copy of a smaller miniature by John Hoskins in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (35.89.3) which is signed and dated 1657. That miniature was formerly identified as Sir John Maynard (1602-90), but the present miniature has been identified since the nineteenth century as Dr Brian Walton by comparison with an engraving by Pierre Lombard for the frontispiece of Biblia Polyglotta, 1657. Brian Walton, DD, Royalist clergyman, published his Biblia Polyglotta (6 vols) between 1654 and 1657. He was created Chaplain in Ordinary to Charles II at the Restoration and Bishop of Chester in 1660.
