Watercolour on ivory | RCIN 420134

Prince Henry Benedict, Cardinal York (1725-1807) was the second son of James Stuart, the 'Old Pretender'. He was elected cardinal in 1747 and assumed the title of Henry IX in 1788, after the death of his older brother Charles (Bonnie Prince Charlie). When the French revolutionaries invaded Italy and confiscated his property, George III gave him a pension. He is buried in St Peter's, Rome, with his father and brother. The monument was paid for by the prince regent, later George IV. Here he is depicted wearing the cardinal's red biretta and robes, and a jewelled crucifix.
This miniature is a copy of a pastel portrait by Hugh Douglas Hamilton, probably done in Rome in 1785-6 and now in the National Gallery of Ireland. The identity of the artist is unknown.
