Charles II (1630-1685) c.1673-8
Watercolour on vellum | 7.2 x 6 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 420129
-
This miniature is a characteristic example of the work of Nicholas Dixon and appears to be a product of the years 1673-8 when he occupied the role of King's Limner to Charles II. Many of his works in miniature have an affinity with the portraiture of Sir Peter Lely, but the present miniature is not dependent on any full-scale oil portrait and is likely to have been taken from life.
Provenance
Possibly one of the miniatures bought from Rundell, Bridge and Rundell in the early-nineteenth century; first recorded with certainty in the Royal Collection during the reign of Queen Victoria.
