Portrait of a Lady called Mary, Princess of Orange (1631-1660) c.1650
Watercolour on vellum laid on card | 2.0 x 1.6 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 420082

This signed miniature is painted on an exceptionally small scale for Samuel Cooper, one which was more often a feature of the work of his accomplished brother Alexander Cooper (see, for example, 422346). The quality of the work is extremely high, even on this diminutive scale. The nineteenth-century identification of the sitter as Mary, Princess of Orange (1631-1660) has not been sustained in recent years, Signed in gold on the left: 'S.C.'
