Portrait of a lady, called Mary Fairfax, Duchess of Buckingham (1638-1704). c.1659-1700
Watercolour on vellum laid on card with a gessoed back | 7.3 x 5.9 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 420075
-
This miniature has suffered from extensive retouching; it seems, however, to bear some relationship to Samuel Cooper and the fact that it is on vellum on a gessoed card suggests that it originated in the seventeenth-century. The sitter appears to be the same subject who appears in a miniature by Samuel Cooper in the collection of the Duke of Buccleuch, bearing a questionable identification as Mary Fairfax, Duchess of Buckingham.
Provenance
Acquired from J.A. Hatfield in 1856 as part of a group of three miniatures of General Fairfax and his family (also including 420077 and 420078).
