A white carrara marble group of Roberto and Margherita of Bourbon-Parma, children of Charles III, Duke of Parma and Princess Louise Marie Thérèse of France. The Prince is depicted standing naked behing his sister, resting his left hand on her left shoulder, showing her a rose which he holds in his right hand. Princess Marguerita is shown wearing loose classical draperies, seated on a square pedestal, her head turned to the right, her eyes fixed on the rose held by his brother, and holding a floral garland in her hands.
The symbols of the Bourbon-Parma dynasty are carved on the side of the pedestal.
A letter in the Royal Archive dated 22nd June 1854, sent from Antonio Panizzi (1797–1879) librarian at the British Museum, to Charles Grey (1804-1870) secretary to Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, reveals that the artist had travelled to London to supervise the delivery and personally unpack the work:- 'An Italian sculptor, Mr Vincenzo Consani, has brought me a letter of introduction from Parma, from which it appears as is confirmed by him, that he has sculptured a group representing the two sons of the late Duke of Parma, and that that group is sent by the widow of the Duke, now Regent at Parma, to Her Majesty. This poor gentleman is much put out because the package, as also another addressed to HRH the Prince Albert, has been addressed to the Queen, and he does not know what is become of either. He is moreover extremely anxious to unpack the two packages himself''. The second work addressed to HRH Prince Albert is possibly the sculpture of A Young boy representing music, which is also in the Royal Collection (RCIN 41039).Provenance
Given to Queen Victoria by Prince Carlo III of Bourbon-Parma in 1853. Recorded in the 1901 Inventory of Osborne House (On stand 41067.1).
