Alexandre-Auguste Robineau (1747-1828)
George IV (1762-1830) when Prince of Wales Signed and dated 1787
-
Robineau was a composer and violinist as well as artist; he used the name Alexandre for his musical and Auguste for his artistic activities. He was in London a great deal in the 1780s coming into contact with the Prince of Wales in both his professional capacities. This portrait is not particularly well drawn or structured but it has a kind of fashion-plate glamour which must have appealed to the sitter. The Prince appears the height of elegance wearing black hat and blue coat with Star of the Garter; right hand resting on cane and left hand on his hip. Signed and dated: 'Robineau 1787 London'
Provenance
Presumably painted for George IV when Prince of Wales; recorded at Carlton House in 1816 (nos 300) and 1819 (nos 385); in Windsor Castle in 1858 (Room 331)
