This is a copy by Frederick Say of the head and shoulders of Prince Albert from the full-length portrait (RCIN 405130) painted by Winterhalter in 1859. The Prince had died in December 1861 and as early as 9 January 1862 Queen Victoria commissioned Say to paint a picture of 'beloved Albert'. By March it was 'hanging in my dressing room, where it looks so well'. Later she moved it to her bedroom at Osborne on the Isle of Wight.
