Glen Gelder Signed and dated 1864
-
The painting shows the view from Glen Gelder, on the Balmoral estate in Scotland, possibly from Conachcraig, towards Beinn a Bhuird in the Grampians, which are covered with snow in the distance. When Queen Victoria had made her first ascent of Lochnagar in 1848 she had noticed the beautiful view of 'Ben-na-Bhourd' and she had climbed it in 1850. The new castle of Balmoral was built from granite from the quarries of Glen Gelder, which produced a stone that was white in colour.
Signed and dated: AB [in monogram] 1864. Inscribed on the backboard with the name of the artist, title and date. On the frame the subject is dated 21 October 1864.Provenance
Painted for Queen Victoria.
