Aya was a saddle horse acquired in June 1860 and ridden by Prince Albert on 16 November 1861, the last time he shot at High Standing Hill in Windsor Great Park, probably the setting for this painting. Prince Albert died on 14 December 1861. John Clark worked in the Mews and entered the Prince's service in 1842. In 1878 the Queen presented him with the Victoria Faithful Service Medal. He was pensioned off in 1880.
Provenance
Given by Queen Victoria to Albert Edward, Prince of Wales for Christmas 1864.
