The artist's brother, Franz Xaver Winterhalter, explained that it was a painting of the son of a friend of theirs, Count Jaubert, and that the costume was Florentine, from the time of Boccaccio and Dante.
Originally inscribed on the back with the name of the artist and the date, 1852.Provenance
