William Corden the Elder (1797-1867)
Victoria, Duchess of Kent (1786-1861) 1849
-
This is a copy by William Corden of a portrait of the Duchess of Kent (RCIN 405129) by Winterhalter painted in 1849.
The Duchess, Queen Victoria's mother, is depicted in a landscape setting, wearing a morning dress with a bonnet and a black shawl. The original painting was hung over a door in the Dining-Room at Osborne, but Queen Victoria remarked that 'I hardly think it will do for such a fine picture to be so much in shadow' and it was transferred to the Queen's Sitting-Room in Buckingham Palace. This painting was made to take the original's place at Osborne.
Inscribed on the back as a copy by Corden, after Winterhalter, painted in 1849. -
