St John holding his Gospel. One of a group of four ceramic panels of the Evangelists (RCIN 403898-9 & 408900-1), designed by Herbert Wilson Foster (1848 - 1929), an English porcelain decorator, and produced by Mintons. Foster is known to have worked at Mintons from 1872, where he specialized in portraits of contemporary personalities, including members of the Royal family. The artist exhibited paintings at the Royal Academy, and taught painting at Nottingham School of Art from 1893. Both Foster and his wife, Rebecca, exhibited their paintings at Nottingham Castle Local Artists' Exhibitions between 1894 -1917.
