One of a series of seven paintings commissioned by His Majesty The King in 2022 when he was The Prince of Wales to pay tribute to the sitters’ remarkable stories and their contribution for services to Holocaust awareness and education.
When the Second World War broke out in 1939, Anita Lasker was an accomplished cellist. In 1943, she and her younger sister, their family’s only survivors, were deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau. She played in the camp’s Women’s Orchestra, amidst death and forced labour, and ultimately credits the orchestra with her survival. After enduring the horrors of Bergen-Belsen, they were liberated on 15 April 1945. She later settled in London and became a founding member of the English Chamber Orchestra.Provenance
