The walls of the Queen’s Sitting Room on the top floor of Queen Mary’s Dolls’ House are decorated with stylised waterlilies and lily pads on a glimmering gold backdrop, with darker gold cloud-like shapes above. These were painted by the illustrator Edmund Dulac, who worked with Edwin Lutyens and Queen Mary herself to create a room to the latter’s taste, filled with japanned furniture and display cases containing genuine Chinese and Japanese works of art. This miniature interior decoration echoes aspects of the Chinese Chippendale room in Queen’s Mary’s private apartments at Buckingham Palace.
