In Queen Mary’s Dolls’ House, even the King’s Bathroom has an elaborate decorated ceiling. It was designed by Laurence Irving, the youngest artist to contribute painted work to the Dolls’ House. Irving was best known as a set designer, and uses his expertise in this area to produce a bold and bright composition for the complex vaulted space of the miniature bathroom. As a whole, his scheme represents the fall of Adam and Eve: they are shown eating from the Tree of Life on one of the soffit panels, and then being expelled by an angel on the other. The cavemen shown in the lunette on the back wall help emphasise the moral of this story, by showing the harsh conditions that had to be endured following the Fall of Man.
