'God Save The Queen' c. 1923

The ceiling of the King’s Bedroom in Queen Mary’s Dolls’ House was decorated by American artist-illustrator George Wolfe Plank. On the flat oblong crowning the arched coving of the room, Plank has painted a pergola with vines and flowers. He uses trompe-l’oeil foreshortening to suggest that the pergola is actually rising up from the ceiling. Close observation reveals that the lattice is also a musical stave, upon which has been painted the notation for the first line of ‘God Save the King’. In The Book of the Queen’s Dolls’ House (1924), William Newton contrasts Plank’s serene composition with the swirling, dynamic ceiling painting in the Queen’s Bedroom (408570), remarking on the suitability of each: ‘queens may dream, but kings must sleep’.
