In Queen Mary’s Dolls’ House, even the Queen’s Bathroom has an elaborate decorated ceiling. Artist, illustrator and designer Maurice Greiffenhagen painted the two circular ceiling panels with mermaids, one of his favourite subjects, in his signature, Art Nouveau style. These mermaids are surrounded by stylised whales and fish, and the concentric white circles on the blue background indicate waves. By painting gold rays around the light fixtures hanging from these panels, Greiffenhagen integrates them into his composition. His design also harmonises with the shimmering, mother-of-pearl squinches and shagreen walls of the bathroom. The pen-and-ink drawing Greiffenhagen contributed to the portfolios in the Dolls’ House Library depicts Aphrodite in a very similar style (927041).
