Seasons of the Year and the Senses c. 1923
Oil on panel? | RCIN 408571

In Queen Mary’s Dolls’ House, even the Queen’s Wardrobe has an elaborate painted ceiling. It was created by Robert Anning Bell, Professor of Design at the Royal College of Art at the time. In this complex vaulted space, the ceiling roundels depict the seasons of the year as female figures holding garlands, with floral decorations running down the squinches. On the lunettes, in a similar colourful and naïf style, the five senses are represented, again by means of allegorical women: on the back wall, the sense of Smell is indicated by a maiden smelling flowers, for example, while another holds an shell to her ear to represent Hearing.
