In Queen Mary’s Dolls’ House, the arched coving joining the walls to the ceiling of the Queen’s Bedroom is decorated with a frieze-like composition of swirling clouds and flying, red-winged putti. It was designed by Glyn Philpot, who also produced a painting for the Saloon (408545), and reflects his interest in both the human form in motion and in magical stories. In The Book of the Queen’s Dolls’ House (1924), William Newton suggests that the work might represent the transition from night-time to day-time and back again, in a cycle of deepening blues and lightening greens, punctuated by bursts of white. He contrasts this dynamic painting to the serene composition on the King’s Bedroom ceiling (408575), remarking on the suitability of each: ‘queens may dream, but kings must sleep’.
