There are 35 paintings by 20 different artists hanging on the walls of Queen Mary’s Dolls’ House. This flower painting decorates a modest Maid’s Room on the third floor. The artist, American-born Olive Bigelow, is best known for designing posters for the war effort and women’s suffrage, as well as some portraiture and magazine illustration. This subject matter, a bright bouquet in a gold vase against a dark background, does not seem to have usually formed part of her repertoire. It does, however, recall many of the typically Dutch- and Flemish-style flower paintings in the Royal Collection, such as this one by Jean-Baptiste Monnoyer. A near-identical flower painting, also by Bigelow, hangs in the Housekeeper’s Room.
