There are 35 paintings by 20 different artists hanging on the walls of Queen Mary’s Dolls’ House. At barely 3cm high, this painting is the smallest of these and hangs in one of the servants' bedrooms. It is a simple still-life of purple lilacs in a vase against a pale striped backdrop. Although the brushwork is impressionistic, it does not seem imprecise.
The artist, who has signed the back of the work simply ‘G. West’, is probably Gertrude West (b.1872), an artist who specialised in miniature flower painting and had exhibited at the Royal Miniature Society since its foundation in 1896.
