One of a series of twelve portraits of D-Day veterans commissioned in 2014 by His Majesty King Charles III, then The Prince of Wales, following his attendance at the 70th anniversary of D-Day in Normandy. The series of portraits pay tribute to some of the extraordinary men that played a role in the Allied invasion of Normandy on 6 June 1944, during the Second World War.
Geoffrey Pattinson, Sergeant served with 9th Battalion The Parachute Regiment. In 1944 he was due to land within the perimeter of the Merville Battery, but due to a faulty glider, he landed in Hampshire. By the evening of D-Day his platoon had managed to land in Normandy and he re-joined his unit. The artist, Jonathan Yeo, was later commissioned to produce a portrait of King Charles III which was revealed following his Coronation.Provenance
