Landscape near Malplaquet (possibly Mons) 1713-14

Like the smaller panels on the Ramillies staircase (RCIN 408430), this scene seems to show an identifiable city view, perhaps based on a print. Given the theme of this staircase around the Battle of Malplaquet, it seems likely that the siege of Mons would be represented here, which may indeed be the intention of the scene, though it is worth noting that the bridge visible to the right bears a superficial resemblance to the so-called 'Pont des Trous' in Tournai. However, since this scene, like the rest of the Malplaquet staircase, appears to have been almost entirely overpainted in the 1960s, it is entirely possible that over several centuries of deterioration, the scene has lost much of its original topographical accuracy.
