Oval gold and enamel box, the hinged lid inset with glazed oval miniatures of Queen Mary and George V, framed with rose-cut diamonds, surmounted by a diamond and enamel crown, and with a diamond-set monogram below. The lid and sides of blue enamel with green and white borders of foliage and flowerheads, the engine-turned based applied with a silver and enamel Garter star.
Engraved on underside of lid, 'To King George VI. in remembrance of his Coronation, from his devoted Mother, Mary R. May 12th 1937.'
Queen Mary: Bust-length; facing half to the right; wearing white dress with Garter, pearls. George V: Bust-length; facing slightly left; wearing uniform with the Garter and medals.
With gold marks for London, 1911/12 and mark of Sebastian Garrard.Provenance
Made for the coronation of Queen Mary and George V in 1911. Engraved by Queen Mary and given by her to her son, George VI, on his coronation in 1937.
