Saint-Jean-de-Luz, east of the Bay of Biscay, is part of the Basque province of Labourd. The town, associated with fishing and with the capture of vessels by Basque corsaires, has strong sea walls that protect it from the full force of the Atlantic. A harbour scene with a steam ship docked alongside a jetty projecting from a building on the left; with smaller boats dotted around the foreground, and ships and houses in the background; mountains in the distance under a brooding cloudy sky.
