This is an atmospheric oil on canvas painting of the view of Fingal's Cave, on the island of Staffa in the Inner Hebrides, seen at night. Both the sea and the sky are rendered in a sulphurous orange palette. A small sailing boat outlined in black sails centre right towards the cave.
The distinctive hexagonally jointed basalt columns of rock that form the cave are just visible in the pool of light at the centre of the composition. -
