This life sized portrait is based on a miniature designed by Samuel Cooper, a version of which is in the Royal Collection (RCIN 420643). The figure is shown within a fictive architectural oval window to get from the formal of the miniature (oval) to that of the painting (rectangular). The King wears armour, a white lace collar and a light blue sash. The title of the sitter - 'C. 2. R' (the letters surmounted by a tiny crown) - is painted in gold above the King's head.
