At the last stages of the Battle of Waterloo as evening set in Lord Uxbridge lead a cavalry charge which finally broke the French ranks and set them in disorded retreat. This is the event show in this painting, based on a visit to the site days after the battle and careful interviews with eye-witnesses. It was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1816, accompanied by a detailed description.

Purchased by George IV; recorded in the Armory at Carlton House in 1816 (no 493) and in store in 1819 (no 431); taken to Windsor Castle in 1829; recorded in the Princesses' (now Principal) Corridor at Buckingham Palace in 1876
