Randall Davidson is wearing clerical dress and the badge of the Dean of Windsor. He was Scottish and was ordained in 1874. He became resident chaplain to Archbishop Tait (whose portrait is also in the Royal Collection (RCIN 400545) and married his daughter. He met Queen Victoria in 1882, was appointed Dean of Windsor and domestic chaplain in 1883 and became her adviser and confidant on all important church issues and was at the Queen's bedside when she died at Osborne. He was appointed Archbishop of Canterbury in 1902. Queen Victoria valued his 'practical good sense, unsparingness of self, and earnest purpose'.
