Circular, engine-turned, gold box, probably by Rundell, Bridge & Co, the lid embellished with enamelled Garter, Bath and Hanover badges, with Garter surround, crown surmount and chased foliate scrolls with inset enamel miniature of William IV, head and shoulders, wearing Windsor uniform with the ribbon and star of the Order of the Garter and the badge of the Order of the Bath.
The enamal is an adaptation, with the addition of the badge of the Order of the Bath, from Charles Jagger's miniature of the Duke of Clarence dating from c.1817 (Royal Collection; RCIN 421463)). The inside of the lid of the box is engraved THE GIFT OF / the King / TO / Sir CHAS. THORNTON / 1835; the recipient of the box was possibly Major General Sir Charles Wade Thornton, Equerry to the Duke of Cumberland (1813), appointed Knight Commander of the Royal Guelphic Order (KCG) in 1831, Knight Grand Cross (GCH) in 1837 and lieutenant-general in 1846.Provenance
Possibly from the Cumberland Collection. Given by Queen Mary to King George V on his birthday, 3 June 1925.
