After Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723-92)
Queen Charlotte (1744-1818) c. 1779-1820
-
Reynolds painted a pair of full-length portraits of the enthroned King and Queen to be shown at the first Royal Academy exhibition to take place at Somerset House in 1780; the originals are still at the Royal Academy. This is one of a pair of copies (OM 1036-7, 407380-1), which have been associated with Thomas Lawrence, though do not seem of a quality to justify this attribution. The Queen appears seated, on a dais under a canopy, almost in profile to the left with her head turned three-quarters to the left, wearing state robes with a small crown in her hair, pearls in her hair and long rope around the left shoulder and on her lap, diamond and sapphire choker on her neck.
