Johann Grund (1808-87)
An Angel and two Girls Decorating a Bust of Prince Albert, Prince Consort Signed and dated 1867?
-
Johann Grund (1808-87) painted landscapes, portraits and genre scenes. He studied at the Academy in Vienna, and continued his studies in Paris, Munich, Düsseldorf and Italy. He worked in Vienna, Rome, Karlsruhe and Baden-Baden. Around 1834 he was appointed painter to the court of Leopold, Grand Duke of Baden.
A marble bust of the Prince Consort rests on a wide marble base, which stands on a dais, flanked by hanging purple drapery; a laurel wreath appears above the head, and floral wreaths are draped around it; two girls in classical dress adorn the bust, while an angel kneels below, inscribing the base.Provenance
On 17 December 1867 Grund was paid £40 for an allegorical sketch on the death of the Prince Consort (WRA PP Accounts) - presumably this work; recorded in the Summer House at Frogmore House in 1878
