Francesco Zuccarelli (Pitigliano 1702-Florence 1788)
Landscape with a Waterfall and Two Women with a Boy Fishing c.1743-47
-
In an undulating Italianate landscape a scantily clad female sits on the bank of a tumbling stream, her left foot dangling near the water. A boy kneels next to her fishing with a rod, and a peasant woman stands behind him. This painting is a pendant to Landscape with a Goatherd and a Seated Woman Nuzzled by a Dog (RCIN 407230). The pictures were obviously conceived as a pair, with peasant figures with faintly erotic and unserious overtones.
Provenance
Acquired in 1762 by George III from Joseph Smith, British Consul in Venice (Italian List nos 179-80); recorded in the Coffee Room at Kew in 1805 (no 9)
