This painting may have been presented by the Shah to William IV during diplomatic exchanges between Britain and Persia (Iran). He succeeded his cousin in 1835, but diplomatic relations the two countries were difficult and were finally broken off in 1838. Inscribed on the back as painted by T. Lawes in Tehran in January 1837.

Possibly acquired by William IV; recorded in the Queen's Wardrobe Room at Buckingham Palace in 1876
