Portrait of a Princess c.1740-1815
Oil on canvas | 119.0 x 97.3 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 407189
-
This painting was first recorded in the 1816 inventory of Carlton House, although no artist or school was attached to the portrait. Lionel Cust in 1909 settled on British School, although it has also been considered the work of a German artist. The ermine robe lying on the chair suggests that the sitter is royal.
The simplicity of the blue silk and lace dress, slightly naive style and unusual patterned floor may suggest a date from the early 18th century or it is possibly a later painting ‘copying’ this style. There is evidence of a large repair in the upper quarter.
Pugs were a popular breed in the 18th century and often appeared as companions in portraits.Provenance
Presumably acquired by George IV; recorded in store at Carlton House in 1816 (no 314) and 1819 (no 270), both as Lady with a Pug dog, one mentioning a dove in her hand
