Augustus, Duke of Sussex (1773-1843) 1823?
Oil on canvas | 76.4 x 63.5 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 407171

Lonsdale was an industrious portraitist who had trained with George Romney (1734-1802); during the reign of George IV he styled himself ‘Principal Painter in Ordinary to the Queen’ apparently on the basis of portraits of Queen Caroline. A Lonsdale portrait of the Duke of Sussex was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1823, which may be this one; it is certainly of the same design as one engraved in 1824. The sitter is shown in a black jacket with a white shirt with a stand up collar and white stock; he wears the riband and star of the Order of the Garter.
Provenance
Purchased by Queen Victoria in 1857; recorded in the Lady Barrington's Dining Room at Buckingham Palace in 1876
