Prince Albert crossed from Calais to Dover on 6 February 1840 for his wedding to Queen Victoria on 10 February. His father and brother accompanied him on the packet steamer Ariel which is flying the Royal Standard in this painting. (A 'packet' was a ship that carried mail and passengers on a regular schedule). The crossing took five and a half hours in a gale force wind, but the Prince was met by a cheering crowd. Dover Castle can be seen in the distance.
