Queen Victoria is wearing a diadem that belonged to Queen Adelaide, the wife of her uncle, King William IV. The ribbon and the star of the Garter are prominently displayed and her robe is lined with ermine. The Court Circular of 14 August 1840 stated that the King of the Belgians had inspected Fowler's portrait of the Queen at Claremont and had expressed his approval. There are versions of the portrait at Woburn and Arundel, probably commemorating the Queen's visits there in 1841 and 1846 respectively; an engraving was made of a version that belonged to Sir Robert William Gardiner, Principal Equerry to Prince Leopold (later King of the Belgians), whose wife was a Woman of the Bedchamber.
