This is a copy by George Koberwein of Winterhalter's portrait of Princess Louise (RCIN 404581). It was painted at the same time as a portrait of Princess Helena, her older sister (RCIN 405032).
Princess Louise (1848–1939) was the sixth of Queen Victoria's nine children. Beautiful and artistic, as an adult she supported the women's movement and helped launch the Girls Public Day School Company.
