Martin Ferdinand Quadal (1736-1808)
George III at a Review Signed and dated 1772
-
Quadal was born in Moravia and trained in Vienna; in 1767 he was in Paris and during the 1770s he came to Britain, painting portraits and hunting subjects in Ireland and England. He went to Italy in 1784 and subsequently worked in Germany, the Low Countries and Russia. The King is shown in the company of senior officers, including the Marquess of Granby (1721-70), Lord Amherst (1717-97), Lord Townshend (1724-1807), Colonel Tonyn (1725-1804) and his brother, William Henry, Duke of Gloucester (1743-1805), who in 1700 was made Colonel of the 1st Foot Guards. In a Carlton House inventory of 1819 the heads were described as by Zoffani, which is unlikely.
Provenance
Acquired by George IV in 1812; recorded in store at Carlton House in 1816 (no 277) and 1819 (no 339); taken to the 'King's Lodge' (Royal Lodge) at Windsor Castle in 1823; at Cumberland Lodge in 1858
