A View of Windsor Castle Signed and dated 1681
Oil on canvas | 51.8 x 80.6 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 406952
-
Apparently a copy of Johannes Vorsterman’s 'View of Windsor Castle' in the Royal Collection which was painted for Charles II (c. 1678-80). Although there are slight variations in the foreground, Griffier has repeated Vorsterman’s fanciful view of the south front of the Castle, presumably to emphasise its picturesque appearance. Griffier, a landscape and topographical painter and etcher, was born in Amsterdam, where he was a pupil of Roeland Roghman. He probably came to England early in the reign of Charles II. Griffier specialised in views of London and the Thames Valley, which he often treated with a strong element of fantasy.
Provenance
Probably acquired by Queen Anne (1665-1714) from the collection of Admiral George Churchill (younger brother of the 1st Duke of Marlborough) and listed as such in the inventory of 1710; hanging on the Privy Chamber or King's Pictured Staircase at Kensington Palace in 1732;
