Giovanni Battista Cimaroli (Salò c. 1687-1753)
A Rocky Wooded Landscape with Hermits c. 1720-50
-
In a rocky landscape with dead tree trunks are two rag-clothed hermits. One is standing looking into a stream tumbling through rocks to the right; in the left middle distance a ramshackle hut is visible on a rise.
The work is one of four pictures by Cimaroli acquired by George III but the set is now incomplete; the fourth has long been missing from the Royal Collection. The three remaining works show a strong influence of Marco Ricci and, probably via him, there is some influence of Magnasco in this work.Provenance
One of the four oval pictures by Cimaroli acquired by George III from Consul Joseph Smith in 1762 (Italian List nos 300-3), three of which are recorded at Kew in 1805 in the Music Room (no 2) and Coffee Room (nos 3 & 7) and later at Buckingham Palace in 1911.
