Giovanni Battista Cimaroli (Salò c. 1687-1753)
A Mountainous Wooded Landscape with Cattle c. 1720-50
-
A shepherdess stands with her cattle and sheep on a track in the foreground. A wooded area with dead tree trunks is evident in the left foreground; a figure on a pack mule and leading a second approaches along a track from the right; mountains are visible beyond.
The work is one of four pictures by Cimaroli acquired by George III but the set is now incomplete; the fourth has long been missing from the Royal Collection. The three remaining works show a strong influence of Marco Ricci.Provenance
One of the four oval pictures by Cimaroli acquired by George III from Consul Joseph Smith in 1762 (Italian List nos 300-3), three of which are recorded at Kew in 1805 in the Music Room (no 2) and Coffee Room (nos 3 & 7) and later at Buckingham Palace in 1911.
