Head and shoulders, facing three-quarters to the right, her head turned half to the right, in grey and black with a lace cap decorated with a black lace fichu and yellow, partly striped, ribbons; grey background.
The Duchess of Kent records on 18th June 1857 that soon after breakfast she "dressed to sit for my picture to Winterhalter at Buckingham Palace. It is a great penitence for me to sit for my picture, but it is for Victoria. It made me very tired". The Queen recorded on 27th June that "Dear Mama's picture is excellent".Provenance
Painted for Queen Victoria (1819-1901) in 1861; it is a copy of Winterhalter's portrait of June 1857; recorded in the Queen's Dressing Room at Buckingham Palace in 1876
