Lorenzo Quaglio (1793-1869) was the third son and student of Giuseppe Quaglio. He studied at the Academy in Munich, and worked for a few years, until 1812, as a theatre decorator. He travelled through the Bavarian and Tyrolean Alps, producing a study of Bavarian folk costume in 1820. His output as a lithographer includes reproductions of a number of paintings at the gallery in Munich.
in this scene of communal merrymaking, crowds of figures in regional costume are enjoying themselves outside an inn, where a tall May pole has been erected. To the left, marksmen aim at round targets set up at intervals near the foot of a rocky hill or escarpment. In the centre foreground, a dog lies sleeping near some large barrels.Provenance
Given to Queen Victoria by Prince Leiningen, April 1846; recorded at Osborne House, 1876
