A Giant Porter Inscribed 1580
Oil on canvas | 289.6 x 170.7 x 5.3 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 406799
-
The date on this painting 'ANNO 1580' appears to be original. The inscription 'QUEEN ELIZABETHS PORTER' may have been added later. It is not know who the sitter was or whether he was indeed a porter; his fine clothes might imply a higher station. His features show characteristics of gigantism as does the actual size of the painted image (eight feet tall). A scale is provided for the viewer by the staff he holds in his right hand, which is in fact a musket rest, something which comes up to eye level for a normal man.
